This is part of a series of images, mostly Romany, Irish and Scottish Travellers collected from around the internet. Many of these historic images found on the web are without citation. When a clear link to a source is found, I try to include it. If a source is known, please pass it on and I will gladly include it or remove it if necessary.
Didn’t the Romany people use bender tents? The type of tent in this piece doesn’t seem consistent with the history I have read.
It’s impossible to make such a sweeping generalization about several million travelling people at all times and places. There are earlier continental illustrations of some very sophisticated tentage as well as depictions of very poor-looking brush shelters. It seems that the bender we know today is more of a British Isles traveller/homeless/poor nomad structure.
Thanks. I guess the research I read was regional.
Maybe regional and temporal. I’ll bet it was mostly British.
