Preindustrial Craftsmanship 
Juliette de Bairacli Levy wrote two books about living with the gypsies. I saw a bunch of her photos on line, but not sure now how I found them. She lived in a time when she could travel around the Mediterranian with a goat and a pack of hounds, crossing borders, living very simply. Her herbal cure for distemper brought her fame among dog lovers.
That is excellent. I would love to do that myself.
