Beer drinking was not uncommon for kids back then. I recently read a book called Tom Brown’s Schooldays, which chronicles life in a British public school during the early 1800’s. Beer drinking seems to have been the norm, at least at school!
Yup. Damn the protestant reformation and its puritanical ways! Cobbett also rails against tea as it keeps you awake. That can’t be healthy.
