Here’s an image of my great-grandfather Arbuckle on a very futuristic looking scooter. It wasn’t his, and I doubt he actually rode it but it seems to have belonged to his brother-in-law (Campbell). The photo is in the Campbell’s yard in Long Beach, California, probably in 1946 or 1947. If anybody can identify the model, please let me know as I don’t know much about the early scooters coming into the US. It must have been a fairly big bike as he was on the tall side. Glad to see the love of scooters isn’t new to the family.
Update: It appears to be a Salsbury Motor Glide, manufactured in California. This scooter introduced the continuously variable transmission (CVT) that we all know and love. Thanks to Luc for pointing the way.
Just a note: I don’t generally ride without a helmet and gloves as I hope to avoid being maimed or killed in a road accident. I need my head and hands.
